Abstract
Mammography screening is widely regarded as one of the most successful approaches to reduce breast cancer mortality. And yet, unfortunately, not all individuals will benefit equally from current screening programs. Underdiagnosis is more of a problem in women with extremely dense breast tissue. Appropriately, the EUSOBI guideline allows that MRI be performed either as a supplement or mammography or as a standalone examination. To associated costs for screening, the use of abbreviated protocols may be beneficial.
Also, breast MRI can play an important role in guiding surgery and treatment for breast cancer. Multiple studies confirm the superiority of MRI to other imaging modalities for tumor size estimation and detection of additional tumor foci in the ipsilateral and contralateral breast. In order to realize that oncologic and surgical treatment, evaluation should be adapted to the underlying question.
